What Are the Different Types of Braces in The Virgin Islands?

Braces, regardless of the type you get, are all used to help patients achieve a healthier and more functional smile. They use constant pressure to usher teeth into better positions, close gaps, ease crowding, improve bite, and much more.

There are several types of braces to consider, and each one will be better for particular candidates and life circumstances. The following braces are some of the most common options available to orthodontic patients:

  • Traditional metal braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Invisalign or clear aligners
  • Lingual braces
  • Clear braces
  • Removable braces
  • Mini braces

As the names imply, some of the braces are made to look more aesthetically pleasing than traditional options. However, some of these are also easier to clean, more comfortable, or more difficult to lose.

Who Is a Candidate for Braces in The Virgin Islands?

There are several factors that might impact a patient’s candidacy for braces, including some of its alternatives. If you exhibit some of the following factors, you may be eligible for braces:

  • Lost all baby teeth
  • Have all adult teeth
  • No gum disease or oral health concerns
  • Not allergic to any metals or other components
  • Healthy and strong teeth without tooth decay
  • Have a misaligned bite, crowding, gapping, or other dental issues that may impact function

Other factors can also affect your eligibility for braces in the Virgin Islands, so we encourage you to speak with your dentist and orthodontist about your medical history during your consultation. Information relating to your allergies, surgeries, medical conditions, and medications should be discussed thoroughly so you and your providers can make an informed decision.

Reach out to your VI Dental Center orthodontist about any concerns you may have about treatment or timelines.

Invisalign Candidacy

Candidacy for clear aligners is different from eligibility for most other braces. This is because Invisalign is removable and must be worn for at least 22 hours daily. For example, younger patients or those who are forgetful may accidentally lose their aligner trays, making it much more costly and difficult to correct dental issues.

Clear aligners are also not a good option for certain patients with severe alignment issues. For instance, those with significant bite problems would likely see faster results with traditional braces. These patients would also spend less time wearing their braces compared to the period they would have to wear their clear aligners.

How to Clean and Care for Your New Braces

Taking proper care of your braces or clear aligners is essential, as this will help ensure they stay in top condition for the duration of your treatment. We encourage you to take proper care of your braces by consistently practicing the following techniques:

  • Brushing your teeth after every snack and meal, for at least two minutes each time
  • Using a soft- or medium-bristled toothbrush
  • Brushing thoroughly above and around the brackets to dislodge food particles
  • Changing your toothbrush regularly, at least four times per year
  • Flossing regularly
  • Considering getting a floss alternative, like interdental brushes, specially made floss, or a water or air flosser
  • Getting an orthodontist-recommended mouthwash
  • Avoiding foods that could stain your teeth or break your brackets
  • Visiting your dentist and orthodontist regularly, including for cleanings, check-ups, tightenings, and emergencies

Additional tools and steps may be necessary if you get more specialized braces, so we encourage you to communicate openly with your oral health team. If you have any questions about properly caring for your braces or clear aligners, please contact VI Dental Center for support.
